Sony held its State of Play broadcast Wednesday, where it shared new updates and trailers for upcoming games on the PS5. The livestream also featured a few surprise reveals and a new Sony controller. But there were no updates on Insomniac Games’ Wolverine and Santa Monica Studio’s next project. The State of Play broadcast focussed on upcoming projects from Japanese developers and revealed 007 First Light, IO Interactive’s James Bond game that’s set for launch on PC and consoles in 2026.
State of Play confirmed five new levels for Astro Bot, updated the release dates for several already announced titles, and revealed an enhanced version of a classic Final Fantasy game. At the show, Sony also confirmed a dedicated State of Play for Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei coming next month.
Perhaps the biggest first-party reveal was a fighting game —Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, a collaboration between PlayStation Studios, Marvel Games and Arc System Works, the acclaimed Japanese studio developer fighting titles like Guilty Gear and Granblue Fantasy Versus. The tag fighting title features a vast roster of Marvel superheroes and the studio’s distinct art style.
The PlayStation parent also announced a few PlayStation Plus additions, including a day-one launch on the Game Catalog in August. The PS2 version of Deus Ex is joining Game Catalog on June 17, while Twisted Metal 3 and Twisted Metal 4 are coming to PS Plus Premium’s Classics Catalog on July 15. PS Plus Premium users will also get the original PlayStation versions of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis later this summer as part of the Classics Catalog. Sony also revealed its first wireless fight stick, codenamed Project Defiant. The new controller is custom designed by PlayStation for fighting games and can connect to PC and PS5 wirelessly through PlayStation Link or via a wired connection. Project Defiant controller will be launched in 2026. Here are the biggest announcements at State of Play:

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls
Sony is bringing a 4v4 tag-team fighting game, developed by genre veterans Arc System Works in collaboration with Marvel Games, to PS5 and PC in 2026. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls reimagines popular Marvel superheroes like Captain America, Spider-Man and Iron Man in a new art style and pits them against each other across a variety of arenas.
The game attempts to evolve the fighting genre with 4v4 matchups featuring intuitive controls, vibrant character designs, and colourful stages. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls will be easy to pick up and play for players new to the fighting genre, while providing depth and complexity that veterans will enjoy, the developer said. It will launch on PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store) in 2026.
Nioh 3
Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja revealed Nioh 3 at State of Play. A follow-up to 2020’s Nioh 2, the upcoming action-RPG allows players to fight in two distinct combat styles: samurai and ninja. While the samurai style focusses on series-familiar melee action, the ninja style favours quick movements, dodges and aerial actions. Players will be able to switch between two styles instantly and play in their preferred way.
Nioh 3 will feature trademark Yokai boss fights, plenty of open exploration, deep combat and a story set in Japan’s turbulent Sengoku period. The game will launch in early 2026 on PS5 and PC (via Steam). A demo is currently available on PS5.
Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles
Square Enix revealed Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, an enhanced version of the original PlayStation game from 1990, at State of Play. This new version of the game comes with fully voiced dialogue, optimized and updated UI, graphical improvements, and other quality of life features.
The new release also comes with a classic version of the game for players who prefer the original as it was. The turn-based RPG arrives on PC (via Steam) PS4, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game is currently up for pre-order.\
Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection
The State of Play show had plenty of surprises for fighting game fans. In addition to Arc System Works’ Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, the presentation revealed Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection. The collection includes the original versions of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, restored by Digital Eclipse. The comprehensive collection also includes some home versions of these games from vintage 16-bit consoles and handheld systems.
All restored games can be played online with rollback netcode, Digital Eclipse said. Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection launches on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 later this year.
Romeo is a Dead Man
Japanese developer Grasshopper Manufacture unveiled Romeo is a Dead Man, an untra-violent action title, at State of Play. The studio debuted a flashy, action-packed gameplay trailer with brutal melee action. The game puts players in the shoes of Romeo Stargazer, a man stuck between life and death. As an FBI Space-Time special agent “Dead Man”, Romeo is tasked with hunting down space-time’s most wanted fugitives across multiple universes.
The blood-soaked trailer shows Romeo using both swords and guns to dispatch enemies. The game is set for launch in 2026 across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.
